One of the key behavior of a high performing teams is being: clear on roles and responsibilities.
When we’re clear about roles and responsibilities, both individuals and teams know what is expected, and who is responsible for what. We also know who has decision authority, and what role the team(s) play in making important decisions.
Without this clarity – where roles are ambiguous – teams will struggle because no one is sure who is responsible for fulfilling important duties.

I’m sure, like me, you’ve probably attended a meeting or received an email in the past and wondered why you were included. Whether it’s an email, a meeting, or an action, why not save yourself some time by just asking a simple question to help bring some accountability, ownership, and set clear expectations on what’s needed.
Ask yourself: what is my role and what is expected of me?
If I’m not clear on why I’m being asked to do something, or if I’m not clear on my role, I don’t start the task.
Here are a few extra tips that can help reduce ambiguity and promote role clarity:
Organize the project work according to individual strengths and capabilities
Identify who is primarily responsible for accomplishing important tasks, and who should be their backup during high workloads and absences
Document action items, including the person responsible and the targeted date for completion
For key decisions, determine who is responsible for making the final decision (authority), who should be consulted before the decision is made, and who should be informed after the decision is made.
